Call in the Marines for Softball Title

The City Section softball championship game Tuesday will have a distinctive South Bay feel when Marine League rivals Carson and San Pedro play at UCLA.

Carson (25-7) advanced to the final on the strength of sophomore Adrienne Alo’s swing. Alo hit a fourth-inning home run that gave the Colts a 1-0 victory over defending champion Woodland Hills El Camino Real on Tuesday at South Gate Park.

Carson lost to El Camino Real, 3-0, in the championship game last year. El Camino Real failed to reach the final for the first time since 1995.

“The difference is we wanted it more this year,” said Alo, who had two of Carson’s three hits.

Carson pitcher Jessica Ruiz (14-2) gave up six hits and walked five, but struck out 10.

San Pedro (22-5-1) held off Granada Hills Kennedy for a 9-8 semifinal victory. The Pirates are trying to win their second title in three years.

Kennedy scored five runs in the bottom of seventh inning, but with Karla Velasco representing the tying run at third base and Ryane Montes at first, Natalie Tam struck out Antoinette DaSilva for the fourth time to end the game.

Tam (21-4), who pitched no-hitters in the first two rounds, gave up eight hits but benefited from San Pedro’s eight-run second inning.

Washington plays Monroe in the Invitational final.

The City Section boys’ golf championships will be Tuesday and Wednesday at the Harding and Wilson courses at Griffith Park.

Palisades is the defending champion and Dolphin sophomore Ed Turner is the defending individual champion.

The tournament covers two 18-hole rounds.

Last year, on the second day of the tournament, Turner shot a seven-under-par 65 at the Wilson course, making a 15-foot putt for his seventh birdie on the par-four 18th hole to win by one stroke.

Max Czernin of Palisades, Ken Eda of University, Gavin Witzer of Westchester, Evan Lieb of Hamilton, Alex Paek of Marshall and Doo Kang of San Pedro are among the contenders for this year’s title.
