Four County Players Make All-WAC

Two former Fountain Valley High School players have been named to the All-Western Athletic Conference softball team.

Lovianne Jung, a sophomore second baseman at Fresno State, was named to the conference’s first team, and San Jose State freshman catcher Rocky Staniorski was named to the second team.

Fresno State’s Lindsay Fossatti, a sophomore third baseman who played at Foothill High, and San Jose State senior outfielder Kim Bentley, who played at El Modena and Santa Ana College, also were named to the first team.

It is the second time Fossatti has been a first-team honoree.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cypress High’s Amanda Sellers and Golden West College’s Rebecca Larsen signed to play for UC Irvine on Wednesday.

Sellers, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker, was a two-time All-Empire League selection. Larsen, a 6-2 middle blocker, helped the Rustlers win a state title.

ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

The county’s top male and female high school athletes will be honored at the Orange County Athletic Directors’ Athlete of the Year banquet at 7 p.m. May 24 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Candidates for male athlete of the year are: Dustin Smith (Capistrano Valley Christian), Augie Escobar (Villa Park), Daniel Mejia (Katella), Matt Winter (Heritage Christian), Mark Ahlberg (Troy), Junior Diaz (Garden Grove), Julian Gonzalez (Saddleback), Jason Whieldon (Orange Lutheran), Kenny Washington (Brea Olinda), Kevin Hansen (Corona del Mar), Billy Clayton (Newport Harbor), Matt Grootegoed (Mater Dei), Andrew Spaulding (Dana Hills), Travis Pendleton (Esperanza).

Candidates for female athlete of the year are: Jenny Busch (St. Margaret’s), Vicki Bloom (El Modena), Angela Rodriguez (El Dorado), Felicia Jao (Liberty Christian), Stevie Nicholas (Sunny Hills), Christine Krause (Pacifica), Holly Jamison (Westminster), Laura Miklos (Orange Lutheran), Monika Jackley (Valencia), Liz Morse (Corona del Mar), April Ross (Newport Harbor), Whitney Jones (San Clemente), Natalie King (Fountain Valley).
