When Coach Tom Dill of Notre Dame decides who to start on the mound or when to make a pitching change, he consults first with senior catcher Matt Cunningham, the unofficial pitching coach.

Cunningham, the first catcher Dill has allowed to call pitches, takes an active role in working with the pitchers.

“He does a great job,” Dill said.

Cunningham, who has signed with Rice, has been on the varsity since his freshman year. His father, Tim, is an assistant.

Notre Dame (17-9) plays West Covina South Hills (19-7) today in a Southern Section Division IV quarterfinal at Notre Dame.
