Wiesner Keeps Title in Calabasas

Freshman Monica Wiesner of Calabasas defeated teammate Erin Everly, 6-3, 7-5, to win the Frontier League tennis title on Friday at Calabasas.

Everly, a sophomore, was the league singles champion last season. Both players advance to the Southern Section individual tournament Nov. 18.

In the semifinals, Wiesner beat Katie Brozowsky of Nordhoff, 6-0, 6-1, and Everly defeated Julia Cimmarusti of Nordhoff, 6-0, 6-0.

Andrea Leewong and Celia Durkin of Calabasas won the league doubles championship with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over teammates Jackie Yano and Chloe Solomon.

Pacific View League tournament--Falon Lopez of Oxnard and Alexandra Lee of Camarillo advanced to Monday’s league singles final at Oxnard Tennis Center with semifinal victories at Moranda Park in Oxnard.

Lopez, a freshman, defeated Kristyn Houchen of Camarillo, 6-3, 6-4, and Lee beat Stella Hwang of Oxnard, 6-3, 6-2.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 109, Hope International 67--Lesley DuBois scored 23 points for the Mustangs in their opener at The Master’s.

Erin Buescher, a 6-foot-3 senior guard who was three-time Big West Conference player of the year at UC Santa Barbara before transferring to The Master’s, had 18 points, six rebounds, four assists, seven steals and three blocked shots in 22 minutes.

DuBois made 11 of 15 shots, including a three-point basket.

Jamie Harrison scored 29 points for Hope International.

EIGHT-MAN FOOTBALL

Faith Baptist 16, Grace Brethren 15--The Contenders clinched a share of the Heritage League title and avenged last season’s loss to the Lancers in the Southern Section Eight-Man Large Division championship game with a victory at Grace Brethren.

Faith Baptist (6-3, 5-2) took the lead for good, 16-9, early in the fourth quarter when Johnny Case connected with Jason Lopez on a 62-yard touchdown pass play.

Nick Larsen countered with 58-yard touchdown pass play to Steve McClain with 7:47 remaining, but Larsen’s two-point conversion pass fell incomplete and the Contenders ran out the clock.

Lopez had four catches for 111 yards and made 11 tackles, and Tim D’Antonio rushed for 99 yards in 20 carries for Faith Baptist.

R.J. Blackwell rushed for 76 yards in 14 carries for Grace Brethren (5-4, 4-3).

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 21, Santa Monica 8--Pam Navarro scored five goals and Julie Olson had four for the Monarchs (16-8-1) in a first-round match of the Western State Conference tournament at Cuesta.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Ventura 4, Hancock 0--Megan Kelly, Natalya Dergan, Celeste Lord and Kelly Nash scored in a 27-minute span of the first half and the Pirates (16-3-3, 11-2-1) clinched their fifth consecutive WSC Northern Division championship at Ventura.

Moorpark 3, Cuesta 1--The Raiders scored twice in the second half to win a WSC game at Moorpark.

Corey Easton broke a 1-1 tie in the 50th minute on a pass from Kelly Genero, and fullback Stacey Cunningham scored from 40 yards in the 80th minute on a back-pass from Katy Herman.

Oxnard 2, Santa Barbara 2--Norma Gutierrez scored on a penalty kick in the 85th minute and the Condors (15-4-2, 8-4-2) salvaged a WSC tie at Santa Barbara.

Gutierrez assisted on a goal by Priscilla Olson to help Oxnard overcome a 2-0 deficit at halftime.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Royal 15, Thousand Oaks 7--Ramiro Saldain scored seven goals to break the school single-season scoring record for the Highlanders (24-3, 8-0) in a Marmonte League victory at Thousand Oaks.

Saldain, a senior, has 158 goals, breaking the record of 152 by Jack Kocur as a senior in 1992.

Crespi 6, Santa Monica 5--Danny Behrens scored with about two minutes remaining to give the Celts a nonleague victory at Santa Monica.

Hernan Golbert scored three goals and had one assist for Crespi (20-6).
