Mission Viejo Rushes Into League Title Game

Share

Robbie Dubois rushed for 281 yards and four touchdowns to lead Mission Viejo to a 26-3 win over El Toro in a South Coast League game Friday at Trabuco Hills High.

The win sets up next week’s showdown when San Clemente (8-1, 4-0) plays at Mission Viejo (7-2, 4-0) for the league title.

Dubois was the statistical standout, but the Diablo defense played a big part in the win. Mission Viejo sacked El Toro quarterback Tom Kirchmeyer five times, three by defensive end Chris Cole.

Sophomore cornerback Marques Dailey intercepted two passes for the Diablos, ranked sixth in Southern Section Division II.

The Diablos built a 20-0 lead in the first 13 minutes of the first half on three touchdown runs by Dubois. El Toro (3-6, 1-3) never threatened, but Mission Viejo was plagued by penalties and miscues that kept the score from being more lopsided.

“Anytime you win by three or four touchdowns I’ll take it,” Mission Viejo Coach Bob Johnson said.

Dubois started his scoring spree on the first play for the Diablos when he went untouched off right tackle for a 53-yard touchdown with 10 minutes 27 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Eight minutes later, Dubois broke through the left side of the line and went 31 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead. He also scored on runs of three and 39 yards.
