Starks Sparks Valley’s Upset of First-Place Moorpark

Terrance Chapman returned a fumble 22 yards for a touchdown, capping a 21-point fourth quarter for host Valley College in a 24-10 upset of Moorpark in a Western State Conference Northern Division game Saturday night.

The Monarchs (2-6, 2-3 in division play) scored three touchdowns in a three-minute span, erasing a 10-3 deficit.

Running back Tim Starks started the rally, scoring on a one-yard run to tie the score, 10-10, with 9:14 remaining.

Starks, who had 124 yards in 18 carries, followed with a 78-yard touchdown run with 7:16 remaining.

Moorpark (5-3, 4-1), which had an opportunity to clinch a share of the division title, was held to 161 yards. Valley forced three turnovers and had six sacks, including two by end Shawn Price.

Price’s sack of Tim Bird resulted in the fumble that Chapman returned for the final score.

Joey Casillas provided most of what little offense Moorpark mustered, gaining 93 yards in 28 carries. He scored on a six-yard run with 9:12 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Juan Ozuna kicked a 43-yard field goal to pull Valley within 7-3 with 9:25 remaining in the first half.

Shawn Nakamura of Moorpark missed a 40-yard field goal late in the second quarter, then extended the lead to 10-3 with a 38-yard field goal with 3:43 left in the third quarter.
