No. 1 St. Margaret’s Defeats St. Anthony

St. Margaret’s, the top-seeded team in the Southern Section Division V-AA girls’ volleyball playoffs, needed four games to defeat Long Beach St. Anthony, 15-3, 15-6, 13-15, 15-7, in a first-round match at St. Margaret’s.
Setter Erin Balak had 31 assists, Polly Bendush had 12 kills and Monique Kettler contributed 10 for the Tartans (16-1).
In another Division V-AA match:
Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Temecula Linfield 0--Crystal Hickey’s 17 kills and 10 digs led host Capistrano Valley Christian (10-6) to a 15-9, 15-9, 16-14 sweep.
In Division I-A first-round matches:
Canyon 3, Sunny Hills 1--After losing the first game and trailing 7-1 in the second game, host Canyon (12-4) came back for a 5-15, 16-14, 15-13, 15-9, win.
Melissa Sherman had 40 assists for the Comanches.
Foothill 3, Troy 0--Setter Rachel Dalitz had 22 assists and Fay Dunahoo contributed six aces as the Knights (15-2) won, 15-0, 15-2, 15-7. Sophomore Jen Wells had eight kills and Whitney Secor added six kills and 10 digs. Troy finishes 6-10.
Huntington Beach 3, Beverly Hills 0--The host Oilers (15-4) had an easy time as Jennifer Jardikas contributed nine kills in their 15-3, 15-0, 15-8 victory.
Irvine 3, Walnut 0--Olivia Waldowski had 11 kills, Tiffany Trgovac nine digs and Jody Carlson four service aces for fourth-seeded Irvine (14-1), which won, 15-1, 15-8, 15-1.
Mater Dei 3, Cerritos 0--Using five kills each from Ashley Bayer and Whitney Pavlik, the second-seeded Monarchs (18-2) won easily, 15-0, 15-0, 15-8.
Newport Harbor 3, University 0--In winning, 15-0, 15-7, 15-10, the sixth-seeded Sailors (19-9) received 35 assists from Katie King, a team-high 12 kills from Taylor Govaars and 10 kills from Christine Woller.
In Division I-AA first-round matches:
Chino Hills Ayala 3, Capistrano Valley 1--Brittany Koelliker, Wendy Warnick and Janell Migeot had 10 kills each for visiting Capistrano Valley (13-7), in a 15-12, 13-15, 15-12, 17-15, loss.
El Toro 3, Alta Loma 0--Kathrine Varin had 13 kills, Krista Kimble had seven blocks and Erin Wieghaus recorded five service aces for visiting El Toro (14-4), which swept, 15-9, 15-9, 15-9.
Esperanza 3, Downey Warren 0--Sophomore Dyanne Lawlor had a team-high eight kills and three blocks and setter Sarah Engle contributed 14 assists as the Aztecs (12-5) prevailed, 15-5, 15-7, 15-3.
Los Alamitos 3, Palmdale Highland 1--In handing the Bulldogs (13-1) their first loss, 15-8, 15-10, 12-15, 15-4, the visiting Griffins (14-8) received 15 kills and 12 digs from Drue Wawrzynski and 17 digs and nine kills from Sara Kroneberger.
In a Division III wild-card girls’ tennis match:
Sonora 14, Brea Olinda 4--Nvard Sargsian swept in singles, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1, and sisters Erica and Jessica Espinoza swept in doubles, 7-6, 6-4, 6-2, for host Sonora.
In a Division II wild-card boys’ water polo game:
Laguna Beach 12, Sonora 8--Trevor Lyle scored five goals, Pat Sandy added eight and goalie David Bartels made 18 saves for the Artists (19-9).
