It’s No Breeze, but Buena Upsets Royal

Breezie Jordan’s ace sparked Buena High in the fourth game and the host Bulldogs upset Royal, 15-12, 12-15, 12-15, 16-14, 15-10, on Thursday in a second-round match of the Southern Section Division I-A girls’ volleyball playoffs.

Jordan, who finished with six aces, gave Buena (9-7) a 15-14 lead in the fourth game. Royal had rallied from a 14-11 deficit.

“If there was a turning point, that was it right there,” Buena Coach Jack Richards said.

Royal (17-9) eliminated Buena from the playoffs in the last four seasons, including the semifinals in 1998.

Lindsey Martin had 25 kills and 13 blocks for Buena, which led, 13-5, in the final game. Teammate Janee Richards had 57 assists, seven kills and four aces.

“Lindsey and Janee did just an outstanding job,” Jack Richards said. “The combination of Janee, Lindsey and Jamie Vine really fools the blocks a lot.”

Vine had 16 kills and nine blocks, and Kim Coleman contributed nine digs.

DIVISION I-AA

Oxnard def. San Gabriel, 15-10, 15-2, 15-3--Sarah Morrison had 22 kills, six blocks and four digs, Sara Naumann had 19 kills and eight blocks, and Ashleigh Hamilton had 28 assists for Oxnard (19-4) in a second-round match at San Gabriel.

DIVISION II-AA

Westlake def. Riverside Ramona, 15-1, 15-4, 15-0--Brenn Larson had eight kills and 10 assists, Jennifer Schlintz had 14 digs and Jessica Harper converted her seven kill attempts for the host Warriors (16-2) in a second-round match.

DIVISION III-AA

La Canada def. Ridgecrest Burroughs, 15-12, 15-11, 15-6--Vanessa Young had 13 kills and Tracy Neumyer had six blocks for host La Canada (17-3) in a first-round match.

Kalee Heydorf had 10 kills and 11 digs for the top-ranked Spartans, and Megan Blatchley had 12 kills.

DIVISION IV-AA

La Reina def. Louisville, 15-8, 15-2, 15-3--Jennifer Ryan had 16 kills and Ashlie Hain had 20 assists for host La Reina (23-0) in a first-round match.

La Reina’s Chelsie Simpson had 12 blocks, five of them for points, and Cara Kuebert had four blocks and two aces.

Megan O’Connell led No. 7-seeded Louisville (11-7) with 16 kills and five digs. Setter Colleen Hamlin had 21 assists and seven kills.
