Northwood Is Overmatched by Calabasas

Calabasas High lost its third singles set of the season but rolled past Northwood, 14-4, in a quarterfinal of the Southern Section Division IV girls’ tennis playoffs Tuesday in Irvine.

The Coyotes (20-0), seeded second, will play No. 3-seeded Harvard-Westlake in Thursday’s semifinals at a site to be determined.

Calabasas defeated Harvard-Westlake, 13-5, on Sept. 28, but the Wolverines were without No. 1 singles player Stephanie Berg.

“[Berg] makes a big difference,” Calabasas Coach Bill Bellatty said. “It should be a match.”

Erin Everly dropped the first set of the match, 6-1, to Gloriann Lopez of Northwood (11-9). It was Everly’s second set loss of the season but she captured her next two sets.

Celia Durkin, playing at No. 2, and No. 3 Monica Weisener swept their sets.

Durkin, Everly and Weisener improved to a combined 163-3 with Durkin at 51-0.

Harvard-Westlake 17, South Pasadena 1--Stephanie Berg lost only one game at No. 1 singles and the Wolverines cruised at Harvard-Westlake.

Harvard-Westlake (14-5), led by Shilpa Madhaven and Katelyn Rader, won 54 of 79 doubles games.

Berg had victories of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0. No. 2 singles Jessica Leck defeated South Pasadena’s No. 1 Cami Whitney 6-2 then followed with consecutive 6-0 victories.

Chaminade 11, San Luis Obispo 7--Singles players Jen Segar and Christine Ong swept their sets and the Eagles (16-2) advanced at San Luis Obispo.

Chaminade won seven of nine singles sets, offsetting a 5-4 advantage for San Luis Obispo in doubles.

Jessica Testwuide and Roxanna Ezzatian won two pivotal sets at No. 3 doubles for the Eagles.

Ong, playing at No. 2 singles, defeated Jenny Hsiao, 6-1, Laura Tidik, 6-0, and Melissa Oliver 6-0. Segar, playing at No. 1, won with scores of 6-3, 6-1, and 6-1.

San Luis Obispo appeared to be gaining ground during doubles play. Testwuide and Ezzatian, however, clinched the contest with 6-2 victories over Ann Marie Carlson and Corin Belsher and Jessica Murlier and Kristin Wurster.

Cate 13, Campbell Hall 5--Daron Moore and Cheyenne Reveche each won two sets, but the Vikings (14-3) lost to No. 2-seeded Cate at Valley College.

Cate’s Lori Stern swept her sets to remain unbeaten. Cate (14-2) will play Chaminade in the semifinals.

DIVISION III

Palm Desert 16, Burbank 2--Veronica Irinco won a set at No. 1 singles and Anna Nazarian and Joanna Han got another at No. 1 doubles but that was all for the Bulldogs (17-3) in a quarterfinal at top-seeded Palm Desert.
