Chapman 85, Whittier 84--Chapman outscored Whittier by 21 points in the second half to take the lead and hold on in the season opener.

Tim Werdel had 23 points and Mike Gartner had 18 points to lead Chapman. Greg Vecchione had eight assists. Abe Morabbi had 22 points to lead Whittier (0-1).

In the Redlands women’s basketball tournament:

Chapman 110, La Sierra 52--Katy Barstow and Melissa Bynon scored 13 points each, Shamakia Perkins added 12 and Kimberly Nunley had 11 for the Panthers in the second-round game. Sixteen of the 17 Chapman players who saw action scored in the game.

Polly Neves grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Kristy Jepsen had nine for Chapman (1-0), which led, 68-24, at halftime.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

UC Riverside 74, Cal State Fullerton 65--Kandace Hunter scored 20 points for the Titans, who couldn’t overcome a 12-point halftime deficit. Fullerton (0-1) cut UC Riverside’s lead to 57-54 with 4:34 remaining in the game, but the Highlanders (1-0) hit eight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Western Baptist 70, Concordia 56--Aina Kohler led Concordia with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort at Salem, Ore. Concordia shooters were cold in the first half (28%) and fell behind by 10 points at halftime, 35-25.

Concordia improved in the second half by shooting 44%, but could not overcome the deficit. Laura O’Hara added 10 points. Taryn Commins and Jenny Hansen each had nine.
