Cathedral Rings Brethren Christian’s Bell

Share

Los Angeles Cathedral’s balanced offensive attack and aggressive defense proved to be too much for Brethren Christian Friday night at San Gabriel High.

Cathedral’s first score came only a minute into the game on a 59-yard pass play from Fernando Castro to Johnny Tea, and the Phantoms went on to a 48-24 victory in a first-round Southern Section Division XI playoff game.

Cathedral advances to play Oak Park next week.

But the Phantoms (10-0) may be without starting running back Jabari Jefferson, who apparently dislocated his ankle in the final seconds of the third quarter.

Brethren Christian (3-7-1) was led by senior quarterback Kyle Painter, who passed for 207 yards and rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Warrior running back Leon Green ran for two scores and 58 yards.

Jefferson had two first-half touchdown runs of 15 and 25 yards, and finished with 59 yards rushing and 49 yards receiving.

Cathedral’s running game kept going after Jefferson’s injury, as Fabian Ruvalcada had 119 yards and Emmanuel Robinson added 43 yards. Each also had a touchdown run.

Tea led the aerial attack of the Phantoms by throwing for 183 yards, hitting seven of 16 pass attempts.
