Crawford Leads Valley to Fullerton Title

Forward Mike Crawford scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half to lead Valley College to an 82-75 victory over Southwest in the championship game of the Fullerton tournament.

Crawford also had 10 rebounds and was voted the tournament’s most valuable player.

Nate Wilson had 16 points and eight rebounds for Valley (5-1) and DaMarcus Ellis scored 14 points and had seven assists.

Quentin Harvey scored 15 points, including four three-pointers, for the Monarchs.

Valley won the tournament for the second time in four years.

Ventura 83, Merritt 77--Forward Desmond Penigar had 35 points and 15 rebounds, and guard Shaun Ballard added 19 points for the Pirates (4-2), who never trailed in a consolation game of the Porterville tournament.

Oxnard 88, Chaffey 71--Keron Wilkerson made six three-point shots in a 29-point, seven-rebound performance for host Oxnard (5-1) in a nonconference game. Chris Massie had 22 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists and six steals for the Condors.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 71, Cal State Northridge 48--Kristi Rose had 18 points and eight rebounds for the Matadors in a season-opening nonconference loss at Northridge.

Sha’Tasha Allen and ReShawnda Richardson each had eight points for Northridge, which was outscored, 38-26, in the second half.

Ventura 78, Glendale 62--Guard Monique Taylor scored 21 points and Kelly Murray added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Pirates (4-2), who won the Glendale tournament for the sixth consecutive year.

Hawaii 68, Pepperdine 46--Nadja Morgan had 10 points and eight rebounds, but the Waves (1-1) committed 18 turnovers in a second-round Hawaii tournament loss.

Cal Lutheran 69, Lewis & Clark 65--Nicole Sanchez scored 17 points, Katie Placido had 12 and Christina Mosesso 11 for the Regals (2-0) in a Willamette tournament game in Salem, Ore.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Ventura 2, Grossmont 0--Stacie St. John scored her second goal of the season off a corner kick in the 57th minute for the third-seeded Pirates (19-3-3) in a Southern Regional semifinal game at Ventura.
