Two avocado farms sustained $50,000 in damage from two small grass fires over the weekend, authorities said Monday.
The fires, which destroyed 80 avocado trees, broke out early Sunday afternoon at farms at Old Telegraph and West Telegraph roads in Fillmore north of Highway 126, said Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Joe Luna.
County and Fillmore fire departments responded with four engine crews, a water tank crew and a county fire helicopter at about 1:30 p.m. to fight the flames, which were extinguished by 5 p.m.
The cause of the fires is under investigation, Luna said. But he said they may have been caused by sparks from a passing train.
