Last week, football Coach Chuck Lyon of College of the Canyons said he wanted the Cougars to play in a bowl game other than the Western State Conference Bowl, preferably against a team with a 9-1 record.

He went oh-for-two when the bowl matchups were announced on Sunday.

Canyons (9-1) is hosting Hancock (8-2) in the WSC Bowl at 3 p.m. on Dec. 2. The teams finished tied for first place in the WSC Northern Division, each at 6-1.

Canyons is ranked No. 3 in the final Southern California poll, behind top-ranked Bakersfield (9-1) and No. 2-ranked Grossmont (9-1).

The Cougars don’t have much to gain by facing Hancock, a team they defeated, 21-14, on Sept. 30.

Canyons is 0-2 in bowl games since reinstating its football program in 1998.

Moorpark’s string of 11 consecutive bowl games has been snapped.

By losing to Hancock, 35-10, on Saturday, the Raiders (6-4) dropped out of the top 12 in Southern California and did not receive an invitation to one of the six bowl games in the region.

The Raiders have a 3-9 record in bowl games, including a 27-14 loss to Pierce in the Brahma Bowl in 1985, their first bowl appearance.

Pierce’s 21-10 football squeaker over Glendale on Saturday gave the Brahmas (3-7) three victories in a season for the first time since 1993, when they finished 5-5.

The Brahmas, who defeated Valley the previous week, had their first two-game winning streak since 1993.

Moreover, Pierce snapped an 11-game losing streak to Glendale dating to 1984. The Brahmas defeated the Vaqueros, 34-23, in 1991, but later forfeited for using an ineligible player.

No. 3-seeded Moorpark (19-1) is hosting No. 14-seeded Cypress (10-10) and No. 4-seeded Ventura (16-3) is hosting No. 13-seeded Canyons (18-6) tonight at 7 in first-round matches of the Southern California women’s volleyball regional.

The winners advance to the second round on Saturday. The state championships are Dec. 1-3 at Delta College in Stockton.
