Grey Cup: Remember the Titans

Former Cal State Fullerton running back Mike Pringle and quarterback Damon Allen square off Sunday when the British Columbia Lions face the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League’s 88th Grey Cup final in Calgary.

Each player is a nominee for the league’s most outstanding player award.

Pringle, 33, who plays for Montreal, has rushed for a league-leading 1,867 yards, has caught 34 passes for 333 yards and has scored 20 touchdowns. He was named the league’s most outstanding player with Baltimore in 1995 and Montreal in ’98.

Allen, 37, is the CFL’s all-time passing leader with 51,211 yards, including this year’s league-leading 5,352 yards. British Columbia finished third in the CFL’s Western Division during the regular season, but upended Calgary last week to reach its seventh Grey Cup.

BASKETBALL

Brennan Martin, a 6-foot-6 swingman who played basketball at Trabuco Hills High, has signed to play at Villanova in 2001-2002.

Martin had made an early commitment in his senior year of high school to play at Texas A&M;, but he never signed a letter of intent and instead enrolled at Hargrave Military Academy prep school in Chatham, Va. Hargrave turned out 11 Division I basketball players last season.

If Martin completes his courses, he will enter Villanova with four years of eligibility, according to NCAA rules.

Jenny Jennings, a late walk-on, has made the Long Beach State women’s basketball team, a 49er spokesman said. A 5-11 junior guard from Orange Coast College, Jennings was a 1997 all-county choice from Capistrano Valley High. She originally committed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Tony Dow, a 1999 all-county boys’ basketball selection from Ocean View High, has transferred to Golden West College. Last season, he attended Marshalltown Community College in Iowa.

NOTABLE

Former Marina High setter Ashlee Phillips takes the court at 7 p.m. Friday when the Wake Forest women’s volleyball team plays at UC Irvine.

Former Newport Harbor volleyball player April Ross, who plays for USC, was recently selected national player of the week. Ross, a freshman, helped the Trojans to their first Pac-10 championship.

Duke’s Ben Balmages, who graduated from Foothill High in 1999, placed second recently in the 69-kilogram weight class at the Macabee Games wrestling trials.
