Top-seeded St. Bonaventure scored 31 points before the midway point of the first quarter and went on to defeat Calvary Chapel, 73-7, in a Southern Section Division XI second-round game Friday at Westminster High.
“I thought we were playing a college team out there,” Calvary Chapel Coach Jay Johnson said. “They just outclassed us. They have a Class-A program and we can’t hang our heads.”
How bad was it? Calvary Chapel trailed 40-0 when the Eagles (7-5) ran their first play for positive yardage eight minutes into the game. They were down 60-0 before they managed a first down, though Anthony Mangione’s two-yard scoring run with 2 minutes 19 seconds left in the half was the first first-half touchdown allowed by the Seraphs in six weeks.
St. Bonaventure (12-0), which has won 26 consecutive games, was led by junior running back Lorenzo Booker, who was limited to 152 yards on 16 carries, below his 220 yard-per-game average. Booker, who sat out the fourth quarter, ran for two touchdowns and two two-point conversions and turned a screen pass into a 61-yard touchdown play.
Jack Swisher threw for 140 yards and three touchdowns, junior running back Marshall Clark rushed for 86 yards and freshman Terrail Lambert ran for 69 yards and a touchdown and also had an interception in the rout. St. Bonaventure also scored twice on blocked punts.
Although St. Bonaventure twice attempted fake punts with a 47-0 lead, Johnson kept the mood of his team positive.
“This is going to be the last game some of our seniors play,” Johnson said. “We just wanted to come out and have some fun in the second half.”
