City Section singles tournament--Kate Luenprakansit and Chureeporn Arunrut of Reseda picked up victories in the first round at Balboa Sports Center in Encino.

Luenprakansit advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over San Pedro’s Mirna Dukic. Arunrut defeated South Gate’s Ana Becerril, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Eunice Cho and Roxy Ionescu of Verdugo Hills advanced. Cho defeated Veronica Caltagena of Roosevelt, 6-2, 6-4. Ionescu beat Nena Tabu of Narbonne, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.

Virginia Uroza of Kennedy defeated Maria Renteria of Jefferson, 6-4, 6-3. Victoria Wong of El Camino Real and Yuka Otaka of Granada Hills also advanced.

Jasmin Dao and Canna Furuta of Granada Hills had first-round byes.

Christine Dao of Granada Hills, who was seeded No. 4, did not play. She severely sprained an ankle in the City Section team championship match more than a week ago and defaulted.

Others receiving byes included No. 7-seeded Cindy Yim of Cleveland and No. 8-seeded Diana Friedland of Van Nuys.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newbury Park 9, El Segundo 6--Kim Thomas had four goals, one assist and one steal for the Panthers in an opening victory at Newbury Park.

Jennifer Martens had two goals, three steals and one assist for the Panthers.
