No One on Bus Injured When Engine Burns
Passengers were evacuated from a commuter bus on the Ventura Freeway at rush hour Tuesday after the vehicle’s engine caught fire, authorities said.
No one was injured.
The express bus was east of White Oak Street on the eastbound side of the freeway about 5:30 p.m. when the engine erupted in flames, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. The bus driver pulled onto the shoulder of the freeway and got about 40 passengers out of the vehicle. Firefighters arrived minutes later and were able to extinguish the flames within 10 minutes.
The bus line is operated by the city’s Department of Transportation. Another bus was dispatched to the site, where it picked up displaced passengers, Humphrey added.
The engine, which is in the rear of the vehicle, was heavily damaged by the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
