Golden West Streaks to Volleyball Victory

Golden West won its 69th consecutive women’s volleyball match, defeating Fullerton in three sets of an Orange Empire Conference opener Wednesday at Golden West.

The Rustlers (4-0) won the first game, 15-4, but trailed midway through the second before reeling off eight points in a row to win, 15-11. Golden West won the third game, 15-1, to extend a streak that began in 1997.

Natalie Snowden had 10 kills and Sarah Boogaard contributed six kills and a match-high 12 digs for Golden West.

Aprille Brown had eight kills for Fullerton (2-5).

In other conference openers:

Cypress 3, Riverside 2--Christine Tran had 26 kills and Bich Ta had 22 for host Cypress (6-2), which won, 15-17, 15-11, 15-12, 13-15, 15-12.

Orange Coast 3, Santa Ana 1--Lauren Wilson had 15 kills to help Orange Coast (7-3) to a 15-4, 16-14, 12-15, 15-2 victory at Santa Ana. Matala Lualemaga had 11 kills for Santa Ana (1-3).

In Orange Empire Conference golf:

Fullerton 329, Irvine Valley 379, Golden West 381--Fullerton’s Hye Yoon Jung was medalist, shooting five-over 77 and teammate Grace Lee shot 80 to lead the Hornets at Jurupa Hills.

Jennifer Surface of Golden West turned in a round of 82 and Irvine Valley’s Jennifer Cornford shot 83.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s water polo:

Golden West 16, Saddleback 11--Kevin Marsh scored six goals for the visiting Rustlers (3-0 in conference). Johnny Geiger had six goals for Saddleback.

Orange Coast 15, Santa Ana 8--Leading, 8-5, midway through the third quarter, host Orange Coast (6-5, 2-1) scored five consecutive goals to put the game out of reach.

Jeff Pratt scored five goals and Orlando Vazquez three for the Pirates.

Fernando Garcia scored three goals for Santa Ana (3-6, 1-4).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s water polo:

Golden West 16, Saddleback 2--Megan Nolan and Anna Korobova scored four goals each for the visiting Rustlers (15-0, 3-0). Saddleback is 6-8 overall.

Orange Coast 19, Santa Ana 2--Deanna Espinosa, Kathy Klarich and Heather Lemke scored four goals each in limited playing time for the host Pirates (9-2-1, 2-1). Lillian Perez and Zuhayl Valenzuela scored for Santa Ana (2-6, 0-4).

Riverside 15, Fullerton 5--Katie Davis scored six goals for Riverside (3-1 in conference), which led, 11-2, at halftime. Norma Ramirez made 15 saves for Fullerton (5-3-1, 2-1).
