Scott, Bowman Are Missing in Action

Tonight’s nonleague game between Alemany and Canyon highs could be called the Suspension Bowl, with each team missing key personnel.

Alemany tailback De’Andre Scott, The Times’ co-offensive player of the year as a junior, has been suspended by Coach Craig Schuler for unexcused absences from practice, and Coach Jack Bowman of Canyon must sit out because of his ejection last week against Highland.

Canyon assistants will fill in for Bowman.

All-Valley kicker Jose Duarte of Highland enters the fifth week of the season seeking his first field goal.

Duarte, who was 14 of 18 on field goals last season, has missed all three kicks this year, none shorter than 44 yards.

“There’s not one thing different about what he’s doing,” Coach Lin Parker said.

“The problem is that our offense hasn’t generated anything to us close enough to kick field goals.”

Highland (1-3), defending Golden League champion, is averaging 180 yards a game.

Terry Furlow of Palmdale has passed for 811 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions.

Quarterbacks at Golden League rivals Quartz Hill, Lancaster, Littlerock and Highland have combined to throw for 899 yards and three touchdowns with 13 interceptions.

Demetre Booker of Antelope Valley, an option quarterback, is the league’s No. 2 passer, completing 57.9% of his passes for 327 yards and two touchdowns.

Burroughs, which had scored only 12 points in its first three games, had school records of 63 points and 476 rushing yards last week against Glendale.

A repeat performance tonight against Crescenta Valley is unlikely.

The Falcons (4-0), ranked No. 5 in the region, are allowing 16 points a game and have yielded only 415 rushing yards in all games.

Defensive lineman Evan Allen of Hart deflected a school-record five passes last season in a 26-7 victory over Loyola.

The teams meet again on Saturday night at Glendale High, and the Indians will again need a strong defensive performance against UCLA-bound quarterback Matt Ware.

“We told Evan, ‘You’ve got to play just like that again,’ ” Coach Mike Herrington said. “He said he would.”

Last week, Allen deflected three passes and wreaked havoc on Palmdale’s passing game. Allen, who has five pass-breakups this season, set the school record with 16 as a junior.

At this point last season, no one would have predicted Will Broadous and Craig Peters would be key contributors for Valencia.

Broadous was a standout basketball player who had never gone out for football and Peters was in eighth grade at a middle school in the Littlerock district.

Broadous is making things look easy. He has 13 receptions for 413 yards, an average of 31.8 yards a catch, and has scored six touchdowns.

Peters, a standout on the Vikings’ freshman team, was called up to the varsity last week against Chatsworth because the Chancellors didn’t have a freshman team.

Peters rushed for 110 yards in 14 carries and scored two touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

“He’s the real deal,” said Harry Welch, Valencia’s former offensive coordinator who is working as a color commentator for a Santa Clarita-area cable television station.

“He made some moves that were absolutely big time.”
