You won’t see Demetre Booker’s name among the region’s top passers, but the Antelope Valley quarterback ranks with the most dangerous offensive threats.

He has been called the best option quarterback in the state by one opposing coach, the heart and soul of the Antelope offense by another.

Booker has rushed for 407 yards and six touchdowns and passed for 418 yards and three touchdowns.

Last week in a 36-12 victory over Serrano, he carried 12 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and passed for 99 yards, one touchdown and a two-point conversion.

He also had 10 solo tackles as a defensive back.

“To me, that’s not just a game, it’s a career,” Coach Brent Newcomb said of the senior, who has Antelope Valley (4-1) off to its best start since 1996. “He’s a heck of an athlete.”

The Antelopes play Palmdale (3-1-1) on Nov. 3 in a game that will likely decide the Golden League championship.

All-Foothill League linebacker Ricky Galvan has returned to the Canyon lineup after being injured, but the Cowboys open league play Friday against Burroughs with other holes to fill.

Leading rusher Mark Barr is expected to miss at least one game with a hip pointer and defensive lineman Brandon Travillion could be out as much as a month with a separated shoulder.

Canyon has called up quarterback Casey Stewart from the junior varsity team to help shore a passing game that is averaging 44 yards a game.
