Junior Steve Graham of L.A. Baptist has made a noteworthy return to the quarterback position.

Graham, a 6-2, 210-pound junior, has completed 70 of 116 passes for 1,086 yards and 10 touchdowns after playing tight end and defensive end last year.

Graham played quarterback at the junior varsity level as a freshman, but became a two-way starter at his coaches’ request last year because All-Alpha League quarterback Scott Swenson was a senior.

“We thought about letting him compete for the starting [quarterback] position,” Coach Gregg Frazer said about Graham. “But he’s a real good athlete and he works hard. So if you ask him to do something, he’ll do it to the best of his ability and he has a lot of ability.”

With Graham completing 60.3% of his passes, L.A. Baptist is 5-0 and averaging 41.6 points per game entering its league opener against Pasadena Marshall at Alemany High on Saturday night.

“I knew he had tremendous potential,” Frazer said. “But the thing that’s surprised me has been his composure. He hasn’t played like someone who is playing the position for the first time at the varsity level. He’s played like someone who is an experienced quarterback. . . .

“Our passing attack is based on the quarterback reading the defense, taking what the defense gives us, and he’s done a great job of doing that. To have only one interception in [116 passing] attempts says a lot about how well he’s played.”
