When opportunity knocks, quarterback Gordie Pinedo of Hueneme does his best not to let it pass.

Instead, he passes, with ever-increasing assurance and efficiency.

In last week’s 42-21 victory over Muir, Pinedo enjoyed his best game of the season, going 10 of 12 for 217 yards, including touchdown pass plays of 20 and 11 yards to wingback Dwayne Taylor and 35 yards to Richard Thompson.

Pinedo doesn’t get many chances to throw--the most passes he has had in a game this season is 14--in Hueneme’s wing-T offense.

But Pinedo, a junior in his second year at the helm, takes advantage when the opportunities come his way.

He has completed nearly 55% of his passes, 34 of 62 with eight touchdowns and one interception.

“If I get my chances, I’ve got to make sure I complete ‘em,” Pinedo said. “I’ve gotta do my part.”

It might sometimes seem like a bit part, with versatile athletes Taylor, Leslie Lee, Tamar Lee and Julian Gooden taking handoffs and most of the headlines.

But fortunately, there is plenty of credit to go around among the Vikings (4-1). They have won four consecutive games heading into Friday’s Pacific League opener against Oxnard (1-4).

“I’m fine with it,” Pinedo said. “It’s cool as long as we’re winning.”
