Fullerton Women Prevail in Overtime

Amber Schaffer scored with 27 seconds remaining in overtime to lead Fullerton past Saddleback, 10-9, in an Orange Empire Conference women’s water polo game Wednesday at Saddleback.

The Gauchos held a 7-2 halftime edge, but Fullerton responded in the second half with a 7-5 run to tie the game at the end of regulation.

Schaffer finished with four goals for the Hornets (8-4-2, 3-1). Christy Schori scored twice for Saddleback (7-12, 1-3).

In other conference games:

Golden West 16, Cypress 4--Unbeaten Golden West (21-0, 4-0), the top-ranked team in the state, got five goals from Lesha Bounds and three from Ashleigh May.

Candy Gifford scored two goals for Cypress (7-9, 1-3).

Orange Coast 6, Riverside 1--The Pirates, the state’s second-ranked team, used five first-half goals to defeat No. 3 Riverside at Orange Coast. Devon Wright scored three goals and Daylene Coberly added two for the Pirates (14-2-1, 3-1). Riverside is 14-2-1, 3-2.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s water polo:

Golden West 16, Cypress 3--Kevin Marsh scored three goals and six others scored two each for visiting Golden West (20-1, 4-0), the top-ranked team in the state.

Riverside 7, Orange Coast 6--The host Pirates (7-9, 2-3) rallied with three third-quarter goals but fell short in upsetting No. 5 Riverside (15-5-1, 4-1). Jeffrey Sample and Michael Vaillancourt scored two goals each and goalie Graham Harvey made 11 saves for Orange Coast.

In Orange Empire Conference golf:

Saddleback 342, Cypress 348, Irvine Valley 364--Lisa Grimm of Cypress took medalist honors with a seven-over-par 78, but the Chargers came in second as Karlie Ward’s 79 led Saddleback to the victory at Oak Creek.

Carol Miller shot 84 and Amber Reynolds had 87 in helping the Gauchos to the victory.

Top performers for Irvine Valley were Jennifer Cornford with 82 and Mayumi Ebihara with 84.

In Orange Empire Conference volleyball:

Fullerton 3, Riverside 1--Aprill Browne and Erin Carnevale both had 11 kills to help Fullerton to a 15-6, 15-10, 15-8 victory. Fullerton is 3-6, 1-2.

Golden West 3, Santa Ana 0--Natalie Snowden had 14 kills and Stacie Duncan had 11 digs for host Golden West (6-0, 3-0), in their 15-0, 15-4, 15-2, win.

The match took just 41 minutes and gave Rustler coach Albert Gasparian his 398th victory with the program.

Irvine Valley 3, Cypress 0--Lyndsi Johnson and Sarah Phan had 10 kills each and setter Erica Wade had 37 assists for host Irvine Valley (9-0, 3-0), in a 15-8, 15-13, 15-3, sweep.

Cypress fell to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in conference.

Orange Coast 3, Saddleback 1--Lauren Wilson had a match-high 19 kills and Natasha Evlynn had 16 for the visiting Pirates (8-4, 2-1), who won, 13-15, 15-5, 15-11, 15-8. Ingrid Berntsen had 12 kills and Lauren Henderson 11 for Saddleback (7-4, 1-2).

In South Coast Conference wrestling:

Golden West 39, Victor Valley 9--Heavyweight Miquel Prado capped the rout with a pin at 4 minute 51 seconds. Golden West is 9-0, 3-0.
