Mulcahey in Right Spot to Give Crescenta Valley Upset Victory

David Mulcahey scored from five meters on the right side with 1:30 remaining to lift Crescenta Valley High to a 12-11 upset of La Serna in a nonleague boys’ water polo game Friday at Crescenta Valley.

La Serna (12-8), ranked second in the Southern Section Division III behind Mira Costa, scored four times in the fourth quarter, erasing a 10-7 third-quarter deficit and pulling into an 11-11 tie with 3:19 to play on a goal by Tim Murphy.

Mulcahey, who converted the decisive shot after taking a pass from Jeff Little, had two goals for Crescenta Valley (16-3), ranked fifth in Division III.

The Falcons, who defeated La Serna, 11-8, in last year’s Division III semifinals, also got a fourth-quarter goal from Ben Tichner.

Mulcahey, Little, Tichner, Ted Kim and Steve Han each finished with two goals for Crescenta Valley, which led, 8-5, at halftime.

Murphy and Brian Price each scored twice in the fourth quarter and finished with three goals apiece for La Serna.

Mike Hoy made 15 saves for Crescenta Valley, Greg Campion seven for La Serna.

Royal 10, Agoura 7--Ramiro Saldain scored five goals, including one in the fourth quarter when the Highlanders scored four times to secure a Marmonte League victory at Agoura.

Royal (16-3), ranked No. 1 in Southern Section Division IV, clung to a 6-5 edge when goalie Tom Onyshko, who had 13 saves, blocked a four-meter penalty shot by Agoura in the final minute of the third quarter.

The Highlanders outscored the Chargers, 4-2, in the fourth quarter.

Tyler Templeton added three goals and Sean Carnahan had two for Royal.

Donovan Tatum had two goals for Agoura.

Crespi 21, Beverly Hills 2--Hernan Goldberg had five goals, eight assists and three steals for the Celts (16-5) in a nonleague victory at Crespi.

Goldberg scored twice and had three assists in the fourth quarter, when the Celts had eight goals. They took a 10-0 lead after the first quarter.

Rudy Brandes also had five goals and three assists, and Danny Behrens added four goals. Goalie Ryan Martin made six saves and scored a goal.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Campbell Hall 16, Whitney 2--Cheyenne Reveche recorded a golden set at No. 2 singles for the Vikings, winning all 24 points en route to a 6-0 victory over Shemi Jilil of Whitney in a Delphic League victory at Valley College.

Reveche improved to 30-0 this season.

Daron Moore won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 27-0 at No. 1 singles for Campbell Hall (9-1, 4-0), which has lost only to Marlborough.

Campbell Hall’s No. 2 doubles team of Christine Berberian and Rubina Andonian won, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, and is 28-2 this season.

Nordhoff 10, Villanova Prep 8--A 6-4 victory by Nordhoff’s No. 3 doubles team of Emily Johnston and Katherine Magill over the No. 2 team of Pamela Garza and Nikki Blumberg broke an 8-8 tie and the Rangers (5-6) won a nonleague match at Villanova Prep.

Johnston and Magill won all three of their sets to complete a nine-set sweep by Nordhoff in doubles play.

No. 3 singles player Carly DeMoor defeated Villanova Prep No. 2 Elizabeth Madlem, 7-5, in the last set of the day for Nordhoff’s only singles victory.
