Pacifica Pounds Bolsa Grande, 48-0

Pacifica senior Tamara Ferguson was named homecoming queen at halftime of Friday’s Garden Grove League football game against Bolsa Grande, and the Mariner junior class was deemed to have the best float.

Both of those competitions were probably more competitive than the game itself, a 48-0 rout that was Pacifica’s third shutout in as many league games.

Bolsa Grande (0-6, 0-2), which suited up only 22 players, played the second half without a quarterback because starter Alex Guadarrama was in street clothes and reserve Tom Cardona injured his hand in the second quarter. Matador Coach Steve Howard improvised an offense at halftime in which the ball was snapped to one of three running backs at shotgun depth.

Pacifica (4-2, 3-0) took control early, scoring on a 56-yard punt return by Jacob Clark before its offense took the field. Javon Smith scored on runs of four and two yards on the Mariners’ first two drives, and they increased the lead to 28-0 when Ramon Gutierrez recovered a fumble in the end zone in the second quarter.

Bolsa Grande turned the ball over on downs at the Pacifica 37 late in the first quarter, and the Matadors did not reach into Pacifica territory again until the final minute of the game.

Smith, who gained 62 yards in 10 carries, scored a third touchdown in the third quarter, then junior David Heller replaced him and rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown in the final quarter and a half. His 52-yard run to the Bolsa one-yard line set up the final Mariner touchdown, a run by Kevin Teale.

Pacifica has outscored its league opponents 125-0, but will play a nonleague game next week against Tustin, which scored 81 points against Ocean View Thursday.
