Gasparian Gets Milestone Victory

Golden West women’s volleyball Coach Albert Gasparian went over the 400-victory mark for his career as the Rustlers won two matches at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions Saturday at Santa Barbara College.

Gasparian recorded his 400th win when the Rustlers defeated Santa Barbara, 15-1, 15-5, 15-4, in their first match of the day. Sarah Boogaard finished with 13 kills for the Rustlers.

Later, the Rustlers, ranked No. 1 in California, beat San Joaquin Delta, ranked No. 3, 15-3, 15-8, 15-10. Boogaard recorded 15 kills and Amanda Siler added 10 kills and 31 assists. The loss was San Joaquin Delta’s first of the year.

Gasparian, in his 18th season at Golden West, has a career record of 401-37 and 11 state titles, including seven in a row. The Rustlers are 9-0.

At the Citrus women’s water polo tournament:

Orange Coast takes first place--Devon Wright had a goal and six steals and Daylene Coberly had a goal, four steals and two assists to lead Orange Coast (18-2-1) to a 5-1 victory over Saddleback in the championship game of the Citrus tournament.

The win gave the second-ranked Pirates their third tournament victory this season.

Saddleback (11-13) trailed, 5-0, at halftime and scored its only goal in the third quarter.

In a semifinal game, Orange Coast got a goal from Christine McDonald, her second of the game, with three minutes left to snap a 4-4 tie and give the Pirates a 5-4 victory over San Diego Mesa.

In another semifinal game:

Saddleback 7, Citrus 5--Amanda Deathridge made four key fourth-quarter saves and finished with 11 overall for Saddleback. Kinder Powers, Sarah O’Donnell and Lesley Merlo scored two goals each for the Gauchos.

At the River City women’s water polo invitational:

Fullerton loses two--Merced scored five times in the third quarter to break open a tight game and went on to defeat Fullerton, 12-6, and hand the Hornets their second loss of the day in the consolation bracket.

Earlier, Fullerton gave up six first-period goals in a 9-6 loss to Modesto.

Jessica Durkin led the Hornets, scoring twice against Merced and four times against Modesto.
