Cleveland’s Clark Selects UCLA

Matthew Clark, a speedy senior running back at Cleveland High, has committed to UCLA.

Clark rushed for 303 yards and scored four touchdowns last week in Cleveland’s 42-28 West Valley League victory over Chatsworth.

Clark was recruited as an athlete and could return kickoffs, play offense or defense.

Clark’s cousin, Loyola quarterback-defensive back Matt Ware, has also committed to UCLA.

ICE SKATING

* Beatrisa Liang of Granada Hills won the senior ladies’ division of the Southwest Pacific Regional Championships on Sunday in Burbank.

Liang, a 12-year-old competing in the senior division for the first time, dominated the field with five triple jumps and received first-place scores from all nine judges.

The Faith Baptist seventh-grader won both the short and freestyle programs and will advance to the Pacific Coast Section Championships in Anchorage in November. The top four skaters at sectionals will advance to the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships early next year in Boston.

Dave DeGuzman of Arleta won the men’s intermediate division.

SOCCER

* Juan Arias, the junior varsity boys’ coach at Canyon High, has been named girls’ varsity coach at Hart.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

* Sylmar def. Reseda, 15-1, 15-2, 15-3--Krystal Mejia had six aces and Sally Teague had six kills for Sylmar (8-0, 5-0 in league) in a Valley Mission League match at Reseda (3-5, 1-4).

WOMEN’S GOLF

* Western State Conference Match No. 6--Medalist Sandy Jocoy of Moorpark shot a seven-over 79, but Courtney Renfro shot an 80 and Canyons finished with 343 to edge the Raiders by one stroke in a Western State Conference match at Marshall Canyon Golf Course.

Vangie Butler shot an 87 for Moorpark (12-9, 8-4). Santa Barbara finished third with 406.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

* Azusa Pacific goalkeeper Melissa Strother made six saves and Cal Lutheran was shut out by the Cougars, 4-0, in a nonconference game Monday at Azusa Pacific.

The Cougars (12-3-3), ranked No. 4 in NAIA Division I, opened the scoring on Kendra Payne’s unassisted goal 31 minutes into the game. The Regals (13-3) gave up three second-half goals, including two in the final 10 minutes.

Cal Lutheran, which is 8-0 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, returns to conference action at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Occidental. The Regals have a two-game lead in SCIAC play with four games remaining.
