Jon Overturf became the sixth Burroughs player to complete a pass last week, when he connected with Marvin Lowery for a 46-yard gain in a 32-7 rout of Canyon.

No other team in the region has had more than five players attempt a pass.

Linebacker Mark Sutton, who was dismissed from the team at Sylmar and later popped up at Monroe, has enrolled at Antelope Valley.

“Right now, he’s on our campus but he’s not practicing,” Antelope Valley Coach Brent Newcomb said.

Sutton, a senior who had nearly 100 tackles last season at Sylmar, practiced with Monroe in August but never appeared in a game.

Monroe Coach Chris Richards was suspended for two games by the City Section for allowing Sutton to practice while still officially enrolled at Sylmar.

Sutton, who played at Antelope Valley as a sophomore, has not yet practiced with the team while he attempts to fulfill eligibility requirements.

According to Southern Section rules, Sutton must participate in 10 practices before he can play in a game for the Antelopes.

It’s been a long time since Quartz Hill was considered a part of the Golden League race.

The Rebels, 1-17-1 in league games from 1996-99, won their league opener, 17-14, last week in overtime over Littlerock to set up a first-place showdown this week against rival Antelope Valley.

Jorge Portillo’s field goal in overtime gave Quartz Hill the victory, but two earlier touchdowns were significant.

Derrick Teal’s 80-yard scoring run marked the first time someone other than Mychael Williams had scored a touchdown for the Rebels (2-4).

Josh Fricke’s nine-yard pass to Williams was the team’s first passing touchdown this season, leaving only Simi Valley without one among 11-man teams in the region.
