Dorsey on Schedule to Challenge Crenshaw

Dorsey High began the football season with three games scheduled specifically to challenge the Dons.

Dorsey opened with a loss at Sylmar, beat San Pedro at home, then headed north to defeat Arroyo Grande, a perennial Southern Section Division IV contender.

Those three games prepared Dorsey for victories over Roosevelt, Washington and Fremont.

But are the Dons ready for rival Crenshaw?

They will find out Friday night when they play host to the unbeaten Cougars (6-0) in a Coliseum League game at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

“We’re still searching for our identity,” Dorsey Coach Paul Knox said. “We have been able to win because guys are making plays. But we haven’t really found out if we’re a running, passing or balanced team.”

Senior quarterback Stanley Hollis leads an offense that utilizes three juniors--Melvin Petties, Jamaal Fay and Jermaine Moore--and senior Javaun Lewis at running back.

Senior linebackers Steven Thompson and Johnny Gipson and senior linemen Francisco Lainez, Ronald Samuels and Errol Gill are the nucleus of the defense.

Crenshaw, which defeated Dorsey, 42-7, last season, is led by senior quarterback Devin Hollins.

“Hollins is a threat throwing the ball, but our biggest worry is when he gets out of he pocket and scrambles,” Knox said. “On every film we have seen, he has hurt somebody.”

Westchester, the defending City boys’ basketball champion, has been placed on probation until Sept. 1, 2001, and will not be allowed to participate in the 2001 Los Angeles Watts Summer Games because of a violation that occurred this past summer, section Commissioner Barbara Fiege said.

The section’s rules committee this week found that Westchester violated a rule that prohibits transfer students from playing for a new school until they complete paperwork officially checking them out of the school they are leaving.

Westchester remains eligible for the upcoming season’s playoffs.
