Third-Ranked Sailors Beat No. 7 Griffins in Water Polo

Peter Belden and Steven Jendrusina scored four goals each to help Newport Harbor, ranked third in the county, defeat No. 7 Los Alamitos, 11-4, in a nonleague boys’ water polo game Saturday at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Los Alamitos.

Newport Harbor (14-4) took a 7-4 halftime lead and shut out Los Alamitos (12-12) the rest of the way.

Sailor goalies Shawn Johnson and Brandon McLain combined to turn back 13 Griffin shots.

Eric Geoffroy had three goals for Los Alamitos and Tyler Anderson had 14 saves for the Griffins.

In another nonleague game:

Coronado 12, No. 4 Foothill 8--Wes Fox and Brian Alexander scored two goals each for Foothill (14-11), which trailed, 10-3, at halftime. Jesse Smith scored four goals for Coronado.

In the Canyon tournament final:

Canyon 9, Santa Ana Valley 7--Host Canyon (15-8) trailed by one going into the fourth quarter, but Jon Pease scored three of his four goals and the Comanches outscored Santa Ana Valley, 4-1, in the quarter to win the championship.

Chris Meyer added three goals for Canyon.

Omar Reynosa, Abner Castorena and Jose Elias scored two goals each for Santa Ana Valley (15-6).

In the Estancia tournament final:

Edison 9, Fountain Valley 4--Cody Tague and Robert Schuberth scored three goals each for Edison (18-5), which took a 5-1 lead and won the title.

Kevin McCoy scored two goals for Fountain Valley (12-5).

Earlier, Tague scored four goals to help Edison beat Saddleback, 7-3, in the semifinals.

In the Los Angeles Brentwood girls’ volleyball tournament:

St. Margaret’s wins--The Tartans defeated Sun Valley Village Christian, 15-4, 12-15, 15-5, in the championship match. St. Margaret’s Monique Kettler was named tournament MVP.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

No. 1 San Clemente 3, No. 6 Corona del Mar 1--Katy Daly had 16 kills and Megan Blackshire added 15 for the host Tritons (16-1), who won, 15-11, 15-5, 13-15, 15-5. Lindsay Anstandig had 15 kills for Corona del Mar (8-7).
