Snyder Wins Singles Title at Rose Bowl Juniors

Top-seeded Karl Snyder of Newport Beach defeated fifth-seeded Carsten Ball, also of Newport Beach, 6-2, 6-3, to win the boys’ 16 singles division title in the 56th annual Rose Bowl Junior Championships Sunday at Pasadena High.

Aaron Yovan of Irvine and Brittany Reitz of Newport Coast won the 18 mixed doubles title, beating Rafael Nieto of Santa Ana and Mary Hung of Irvine, 6-4, 6-0.

Lauren Pascoe of Huntington Beach and Claire Fermin of Yorba Linda defeated Paloma Escobedo of Riverside and Rachael Moss of Cypress, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the girls’ 14 doubles final.

Scott Hohenstein of Anaheim and Nathan Stadler of Redondo Beach rallied to defeat Alex Krueger-Wyman of Pasadena and Ahmad Mohammadpour of Arcadia, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, for the boys’ 14 doubles championship.

* The 15th J.P. Yamasaki Junior Tennis Tournament begins Saturday at 12 sites throughout Orange County. The tournament, named after a former Servite High tennis player who died in a skiing accident, has 1,200 players, an all-time high, and is a designated tournament for the first time.

The top-seeded player in the girls’ 18 division is Kim Nguyen of Saddleback High. Villa Park’s Lindsey Nelson is seeded second, Reitz is third and Anne Yelsey of Corona del Mar is eighth. In the girls’ 16 division, Lindsey Nash of Temecula is seeded first, Aimee Kim of University is seeded fourth and Tracy Lin of Canyon is fifth. Cosmina Ciobanu of Brea Olinda is seeded first in the girls’ 14s.

In the boys’ 18s, Armando Carrascosa of Calexico is seeded first and Aaron Yovan of University is seeded fourth. In the boys’ 16s, Jeff Doss of Troy is seeded second, Jack Li of University is fourth and Kevin McQuaid of Los Alamitos is eighth. The tournament, whose main site is Ridgeline Country Club, continues Sunday and concludes Nov. 4-5.
