Santa Margarita Wins Golf Title

Santa Margarita, ranked fifth in Orange County, wrapped up the Serra League girls’ golf title Wednesday with a 131-134 victory over Bishop Montgomery at Los Verdes in Rancho Palos Verdes.

The Eagles (15-3, 7-1) won despite the fact that two Bishop Montgomery players had the lowest scores. The medalist was Loranine Fernando, who shot a five-over 41. However, the Eagles got 43s from Megan Mulhaupt and Brenda Progar and a 45 from Alexis Etow to pull out the victory.

In other girls’ golf:

No. 7 Corona del Mar 260, Trabuco Hills 304--Medalist Allison Schauppner shot five-over-par 76 for the Sea Kings (12-5) at Newport Beach and Coto de Caza.

No. 9 Esperanza 132, Ocean View 135--Medalist Lauren Wright shot 41 and junior Melissa Lox had 44 for the Aztecs (12-4) at par-36 Meadowlark.

Marina 278, Long Beach Millikan 291--Lisa Sweller shot 11-over 83 and freshman Jane Chin had an 85 for the Vikings (11-5) at Meadowlark and El Dorado.

In Sea View League golf:

No. 3 Aliso Niguel 119, Newport Harbor 136--Medalist Leisl Hasbrouck shot 38, Charmaine Erasmus carded 40 and Candy Lin had 41 at Aliso Viejo for the Wolverines (17-1, 8-0), who won their first league championship. Shelly Roberts shot 45 for Newport Harbor (7-8, 2-5).

In Empire League girls’ tennis:

Katella 11 1/2, Kennedy 9 1/2--The winning doubles’ teams of of Mariana Miranda and Christine Nguyen and Ha Pham and Nhu Nguyen helped the Knights (10-8, 5-5) secure third place in the league standings. Kennedy is 4-6 in league.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 14, Trabuco Hills 4--The Tritons’ (7-7, 4-4) No. 1 doubles team of Michelle Mitchell and junior Shawna Melton swept their matches at Trabuco Hills (0-8 in league).

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 14, No. 8 Newport Harbor 4--Sophomore Anne Yelsey swept at No. 1 singles for the Sea Kings (16-2), who also received a sweep from the No. 1 doubles team of Leslie Damion and Kristen Griffith. Newport Harbor is 10-5.

Bolsa Grande 14, Santa Ana 4--Nancy Quan, the only Bolsa Grande singles player to sweep her sets, won 6-4, 6-0, 6-1. Bolsa Grande is 15-2.

Irvine 10, Fountain Valley 8--Freshman Evelyn Liau swept at No. 1 singles to lift the Vaqueros (4-11). Fountain Valley is 2-12.

Rosary 14, Sonora 4--The No. 1 doubles’ team of Liz Caballero and Jenna Eyrich swept for the Royals (9-9). Sonora is 9-7.

In Golden West League girls’ volleyball:

Saddleback 3, Westminster 1--Diem Huynh had 11 kills for Saddleback (3-11, 2-4) in the Roadrunners’ 15-6, 15-6, 13-15, 15-6 victory.

Santa Ana 3, Tustin 1--Setter Roni Bravo had 33 assists and Codi Bauer had a match-high 14 kills for the Saints (14-3, 6-1), who won, 15-8, 15-5, 9-15, 15-5. Evelyn Medina and Mary Cadena contributed nine assists for Santa Ana, which assured itself of a second-place league finish.

In the Sunset League:

No. 5 Esperanza 3, Marina 1--Kristy Chester had 15 kills, Sarah Engle contributed 11 and Julie Handy added 12 kills for the host Aztecs (10-4, 7-1), who prevailed, 12-15, 15-6, 15-2, 16-14. Marina is 3-4 in league.

In nonleague volleyball:

Pacifica 3, Brethren Christian 0--Junior Dana Larson had a match-high 11 kills for the Mariners (13-1), who won, 15-5, 15-6, 15-1. Brethren Christian is 3-8.
