HIGH SCHOOL

* CRESCENTA VALLEY (7-0, 2-0) vs. MUIR (4-3, 2-0)

At Muir High, 7 p.m.

There was a time when Muir dominated this rivalry, winning 22 in a row. Not anymore. Crescenta Valley has won two of the last three, including a 14-13 decision last season as the Falcons, Muir and Arcadia shared the Pacific League title. Hudson Gossard needs 298 yards to set the school season passing record of 1,925 yards and Jason Hogan needs seven receptions to break the school mark of 52 in a season. While the Falcons rely on the pass, Muir is built around a running game that is averaging almost 300 yards a game. Muir has outscored league opponents Hoover and Glendale, 116-3. Last week, the Mustangs got three defensive touchdowns in a 62-0 victory over Hoover. Crescenta Valley, averaging 325 yards a game, defeated Pasadena and Glendale by a combined 75-12.

* CHAMINADE (5-2) vs. NOTRE DAME (6-0-1)

At Notre Dame, 7:30 p.m.

It’s the Mission League opener and homecoming for Notre Dame, which hasn’t given up a defensive touchdown since Sept. 23. Finally, the Knights’ defense will be tested by a team that can pass with quarterback Erik Vose and run with tailback Chris Abichaker. The Eagles’ young but talented receiving group figures to challenge Notre Dame. Keep watch of Josh Jones, Amin Abusaleh and Jesse Taylor as they try to get open against cornerbacks Jim Sharp and Mike Luderer. Notre Dame has relied on a consistent rushing attack, led by quarterback Phil Beckmann and running backs Carlos Portillo and Miguel Armendariz. Make the Knights throw and the offense sometimes can unravel. That’s the goal of Chaminade.

* WESTLAKE (6-1, 3-0) vs. ROYAL (5-2, 2-1)

At Royal High, 7 p.m.

Westlake is banged up and Royal is charged up for the game that likely decides the Marmonte League champion. Seven players sat out practice Wednesday for the Warriors, who have won eight consecutive games against Royal. Third-string quarterback Kent Sowell starts for the second consecutive week for Westlake, which needed a second-half comeback to defeat Irvine Woodbridge last week, 26-14. Royal crushed Newbury Park last week, 47-7, and is playing inspired ball despite losing five players for the rest of the season because of an off-campus incident. James Cox has thrown nine touchdown passes and run for five. Running back Greg Morris is averaging 12.7 yards per carry and has scored 11 touchdowns.

* OXNARD (2-5, 1-0) vs. CAMARILLO (3-4, 1-1)

At Camarillo High, 7 p.m.

Both teams go into this Pacific View League game looking to rebound from tough losses. Oxnard was blanked, 35-0, by Buena. Camarillo lost, 40-36, in the final minute to Hueneme, a team Oxnard upset two weeks ago. Camarillo will play without senior running back Loren Cerny, who has a sprained right ankle. Cerny leads the Scorpions with 901 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns in 161 carries. Mike Gonzalez (5-11, 155) and Ryan Creadick (6-2, 232) are expected to step into the void. Gonzalez has rushed 15 times for 81 yards and one touchdown. Creadick has 62 yards and a score in seven carries. The Scorpions also will look to quarterback Mike Jasper and receiver Justin Peterson. Jasper has completed more than 56% of his passes for 1,268 yards and 11 touchdowns with four interceptions. Peterson has 32 receptions for 727 yards and nine touchdowns. Running backs Jason Parker (358 yards, six touchdowns), Aaron Brown (311 yards) and James Cabana (267 yards) have been effective for Oxnard. Quarterback Tim Eglin has rushed for 212 yards and Parker is the Yellowjackets’ best deep threat, with 12 catches for 305 yards--a 25.4-yard average--and three touchdowns.

* NORDHOFF (5-2, 2-0) vs. SANTA PAULA (6-0-1, 1-0)

At Santa Paula High, 7 p.m.

Tonight’s winner will likely claim the Frontier League title. Two-time defending league champion Nordhoff has won 10 consecutive league games. Santa Paula hasn’t defeated Nordhoff since 1990. Nordhoff defeated Santa Paula, 30-8, last season, but isn’t playing like the Division XI finalist it was a year ago. Oak Park is the only common opponent between the rivals: Santa Paula won, 12-3; Nordhoff lost, 24-14. The Rangers’ run-oriented offense is paced by Nick Kaiser, who has gained 851 yards, scored eight touchdowns and averages 7.3 yards a carry. Trevor Weedon has thrown only 72 passes, 10 for touchdowns. Matt Martinez of Santa Paula has passed for 919 yards and three touchdowns. Xavier Ramirez and Jacob Macias have combined to rush for 12 touchdowns and more than 700 yards.

* BIRMINGHAM (7-0, 2-0) vs. CLEVELAND (6-1, 2-0)

At Cleveland High, 7:30 p.m.

There is little luck involved in Birmingham’s surprising run. The Patriots have balance, rushing for 1,363 yards and passing for 1,387. Kevin McCleary has rushed for 968 yards and Scott Jensen has thrown for 15 touchdowns with only two passes intercepted. Ramal Porter averages 19.1 yards a reception. Birmingham is stingy against the run, having allowed only 592 yards. The ground is where Cleveland makes its mark. UCLA-bound Matt Clark has rushed for 963 yards, averages nearly 10 yards a carry and has posted consecutive 300-yard games since recovering from an ankle sprain. Quarterback Antwine Barfield is a threat to run as well as pass. Receiver Randy Bundy is the Cavaliers’ deep threat with six touchdowns and an average of 22.6 yards on 26 catches. Cleveland’s defense is a question mark, allowing 406.6 yards a game, including nearly 240 on the ground.
