Matijevich Leads Villa Park in Water Polo

T.J. Matijevich scored the game-winning goal as Villa Park defeated Long Beach Wilson, 6-4, in a quarterfinal game of the Tru-West Memorial boys’ water polo tournament Friday at St. Francis High in Mountain View.

Down by one goal going into the final quarter, the Spartans’ Charlie Fisher tied the score, 4-4, in the opening minute of the period. Villa Park, ranked third in the county, added its sixth goal with two minutes remaining. Fisher had three goals.

Ross Pulver had four steals and Jared Jones had 15 saves for the Spartans, who beat Orinda Miramonte, 11-3, in a first-round game.

Villa Park will play Newport Harbor, which defeated San Clemente, 10-5, in a quarterfinal game. Ryan Cook had five goals for the Sailors.

In Sea View League cross-country:

Newport Harbor boys win--Chris McMillen, John Peschelt and Jesus Santana finished second, third and fourth to lead the Sailors to victory in the five-way meet at Woodbridge. Woodbridge freshman Michael Haddan won in 15:24.

In the girls’ race, Newport Harbor’s Amber Steen won in 17:45, but Woodbridge swept the team competition with Kristen Berglas, Jessica Kanin and Meghan Bellotti finishing second, third and fourth.
