Harrington Resigns at Chaminade

Steve Harrington resigned Wednesday as softball coach and teacher at Chaminade High for personal reasons, he said.

Harrington, whose teams were 124-56-2 in six seasons at Chaminade, said he has no immediate plans to pursue another coaching or teaching position.

Chaminade reached the Southern Section Division IV final in each of the last two seasons, winning the title in 1999.

BASKETBALL

* Leon Usher of Canoga Park said Thursday he is transferring to Sylmar.

Usher, a junior point guard, expects to receive an opportunity transfer from Canoga Park before Tuesday, the first day of classes.

Usher has lived in Sylmar’s attendance area since he moved to the U.S. from Belize a year ago.

* Frank Robinson, considered one of the region’s top sophomore boys’ players last season at Littlerock, has enrolled at Chatsworth under open enrollment.

The 6-foot-2 Robinson averaged 12.3 points and 11.2 rebounds last season. Coach Emad Whitney said Robinson was on campus Wednesday finalizing classes. School begins Tuesday.

Also transferring to Chatsworth is 6-2 senior Brandon Robinson, who played at Sylmar. Brandon Robinson’s father, Rodney, will become the Chancellors’ freshman-sophomore coach and help with the junior varsity.

TRACK AND FIELD

Melissa McBain, who won the women’s 1,500 meters for Moorpark College in the state junior college championships in May, has transferred to UCLA.

McBain, a sophomore, will try to walk on to the Bruin cross-country and track teams.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Southern Section will hear an appeal on Tuesday regarding the athletic eligibility of senior Nick Zoetewey.

Zoetewey, who won the Foothill League title for Saugus High inNovember, moved with his mother into the Canyon attendance district over the summer after his parents filed for divorce.

But the Southern Section ruled in July he could not represent the Cowboys at the varsity level this school year.

TENNIS

* Katie Gallant, a Louisville High graduate and an assistant at the school last season, has been promoted to girls’ coach.

She replaces Brad Sceney, who has moved to Australia.

VOLLEYBALL

* Chris Thurm, boys’ coach at Hart the last two years, has resigned.
