Thousand Oaks has found a kicker by raiding its sophomore team. Jesse Ainsworth, who kicked a 45-yard field goal last season on the freshman team, was promoted from the sophomore team last week and could end up handling punting and kickoffs for the varsity.

“We tried to hide him as long as we could,” said sophomore assistant coach Gary McGinnis.

The 6-1, 180-pound Ainsworth also plays soccer.

How good is Hart’s offense? The Indians scored eight touchdowns in a scrimmage against Moorpark on Friday and didn’t use standout running back Tim Gregory, who was held out because of a minor injury. He is expected to play Friday against Monroe.

Quarterback Kyle Matter completed his first 12 passes and was 16 of 18 for 190 yards.

If first-year Coach Craig Schuler of Alemany is feeling a little nervous, who can blame him? The 36-year-old has never been a head coach before.

“I’ve been an assistant coach all my life and this will be the first time it’s been on my shoulders,” he said. “The level of anxiety about the little things is a lot different.”

Schuler was offensive coordinator last season at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan.

He got to see Alemany running back De’Andre Scott play for the first time last week in a scrimmage against Valencia.

“He’s electric,” Schuler said. “When he gets the ball, he’s playing at a different speed.”
