Fifth-ranked UC Irvine opens its men’s water polo season by hosting defending national champion and top-ranked UCLA at noon today. The Anteaters host No. 9 UC Santa Barbara Sunday.

* Century High has dropped its water polo program because it doesn’t have a coach, Athletic Director Jeff Watts said. The Centurions have been without a coach since mid-summer, when Billy West resigned.

Water polo--The day that UC Irvine opens its men’s water polo season against defending national champion UCLA was reported incorrectly Thursday. The Anteaters host the Bruins at noon Saturday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Wesley Washington, a guard who played at Fontana High School last season, has enrolled at Mater Dei and will play for the Monarchs this year, Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight said.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound sophomore will likely be a reserve.

“He’ll bring depth,” McKnight said. “His junior and senior years, he’ll be a great player for us. This year we just have too many seniors.”
