Thornton Comes Up Roses by Winning Girls’ All-City Race

Katy Thornton of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy upset Nicole Bonino of La Canada on Thursday to win the girls’ race in the La Canada all-city cross-country meet at the Rose Bowl.

Thornton, who finished 20th in the Southern Section Division IV final last year, clocked 18:47 over the three-mile course to defeat Division III runner-up Bonino by three seconds.

La Canada placed five runners among the top seven finishers to win the meet with 21 points. Flintridge Sacred Heart was second with 54, followed by Flintridge Prep with 58.

Emily Farr finished third in 19:35 for La Canada with Rachel Frandsen fourth in 1957, Carina Garnic fifth in 20:08 and Stephanie Lee seventh in 20:50 for the Spartans.

Crescenta Valley 47, Newbury Park 49, Camarillo 75, Agoura 82, Burbank 96--Laura Jakosky of Agoura, the defending Ventura County champion, won the nonleague meet at Crescenta Valley Park with a 19:27 clocking over the three-mile course.

Jennifer Turk of Newbury Park was second in 20:15, followed by Ana Gjesdal of Crescenta Valley in 20:49 and Anne Holder of Crescenta Valley in 21:01.

Crescenta Valley had three of the fastest eight runners.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Newbury Park 41, Camarillo 43, Crescenta Valley 65, Burbank 70, Agoura 126--Brandon Lucero and Johnny Zendejas of Camarillo placed 1-2, but Newbury Park edged the Scorpions in the nonleague meet at Crescenta Valley Park.

Lucero and Zendejas clocked 16:39 and 16:51, respectively, over the three-mile course, but Newbury Park had three of the next six finishers.

Brandon Nakagawa was third in 17:00 for the Panthers, with Randy Smith fourth in 17:01 and Joe LaSeda eighth in 17:15.

Flintridge Prep 38, La Canada, St. Francis, 42--Jonathan Essen of La Canada won the boys’ race with a 16:22 clocking over the three-mile course in the La Canada all-city meet at the Rose Bowl, but Flintridge Prep had four of the top eight finishers.

Steve Pearson placed second in 16:35 for Flintridge Prep, the two-time defending state Division V champion.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Hart 117, Alemany 137--Sara Jones of Hart was the medalist with a two-over-par 33 in a nonleague match at El Cariso Golf Course.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Calabasas 15, Chaminade 3--Freshmen Monica Wiesener and Celia Durkin combined to win 31 of 36 games in singles play for the Coyotes in a nonleague opener at Calabasas.

Andrea Leewong and Jackie Yano won, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 to spark a doubles sweep for Calabasas.

Santa Barbara 11, Agoura 7--Freshman Yassie Entekhala won three sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, but the Chargers (0-1) fell in a nonleague opener at Santa Barbara.

Entekhala replaces three-time Marmonte League singles champion Brooke Borisoff at No. 1.

La Reina 15, Nordhoff 3--Kathryn Meister and Stephanie Matthews lost only three games in singles for the host Regents (1-0).

Freshman Stephanie Carr also swept her sets for La Reina.

Oak Park 11, Channel Islands 7--Marisa Gilbert and Natalie Jacobs swept their singles sets for the Eagles (1-0) at Channel Islands (0-1).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Hart def. Buena, 16-14, 10-15, 15-6, 15-6--Lindsey Martin had nine kills and seven blocks but the Bulldogs (0-1) lost a nonleague match at Hart (1-0).

Highland def. Saugus, 15-17, 15-9, 15-5, 15-6--Brynn Olsson had 23 kills and 18 digs, and the Bulldogs (1-0) won a nonleague match at Saugus (0-1).

Lizelle Jackson had 20 kills, 20 digs and four aces for Highland.

Village Christian def. Whittier Christian, 15-12, 15-3, 15-3--Maria Abaca had 10 kills and 11 digs, Robin Pearce had seven kills and 11 digs, and Village Christian (1-0) won a nonleague match at Whittier Christian.

Oxnard def. Nordhoff, 15-4, 15-7, 15-7--Sarah Morrison had 10 kills, nine digs, four blocks and six aces for the Yellowjackets (1-0), the two-time defending Pacific View League champion.

Sara Naumann had eight kills and six blocks for Oxnard.
