Add junior Justin Shagrin of Calabasas to the list of promising kickers from the region. In his varsity debut, Shagrin kicked field goals of 49 and 42 yards while averaging 38.4 yards on five punts.

“He’s accurate and consistent,” assistant coach Wayne Quigley said.

Jimmy Rohan of Valencia, one of the top returning shortstops in the region, showed that he might be among its elite punters as well.

With most eyes focused on all-state kicker-punter Jose Duarte of opposing Highland, Rohan boomed four punts for a 44-yard average.

Rohan, whose longest punt traveled 55 yards, consistently pinned Highland deep in its own territory. One punt bounced out of bounds at the Highland two-yard line.

Coach Brian Stiman feels fortunate he was able to recruit Rohan away from the baseball field.

“He’s a great athlete,” Stiman said. “I promised the baseball coach we wouldn’t get him hurt, that he would only punt. I told them that Nebraska did it once with [Darin] Erstad, and that worked out.”

Coach Lin Parker of Highland found a positive spin after the Bulldogs’ 24-0 loss to Valencia, pointing out the Vikings were unable to convert any extra points.

One extra point kick sailed wide, another was blocked and two conversion passes were stopped.

“I’ll tell you what,” Parker said. “Don’t try an extra point against us. We’re tough there, boy.”

Tailback Derrick Teal probably will miss Quartz Hill’s game at Ridgecrest Burroughs.

“It’s very iffy,” said Teal, who injured his right ankle in the Rebels’ scrimmage against Hesperia.

Teal, who rushed for 744 yards and eight touchdowns last season, sat out a 28-14 loss to Serrano.
