Crescenta Valley’s Plan Was to Do Some Name-Dropping

In trying to prepare his defensive players to face St. Francis High and quarterback John Sciarra, Coach Alan Eberhart of Crescenta Valley made sure no one was going to take Sciarra lightly.

“I was telling the kids, ‘This Sciarra kid isn’t going to UCLA because of his name. He’s going there because he’s good,’ ” Eberhart said.

Hart coaches have been getting spoiled by the size of their quarterbacks.

Kyle Matter, the starter the last two years, is 6 feet 3. Before him, there was 6-4 Kyle Boller. And before him, there was 6-4 David Neill.

Next season, the expected starter will be 6-4 Matt Moore.

That doesn’t mean the coaching staff isn’t thrilled with freshman quarterback Sean Norton, brother of varsity receiver Jake Norton.

Sean, who’s 5-9, passed for two touchdowns and ran for three touchdowns as Hart (2-0) registered a 43-8 victory over Thousand Oaks in a freshman game Thursday.

Kevin Rex, a three-sport standout at Thousand Oaks and a two-way starter for the football team, could be facing surgery after injuring his knee last week against Crescenta Valley.

Rex, a defensive back and receiver, said Friday he must undergo an MRI, but a preliminary diagnosis indicates torn cartilage.

Depending on the severity of the injury, he could be sidelined anywhere from three to eight weeks. He’s also a starting guard for the basketball team and starter for the volleyball team.

“I’m praying,” he said.
