Trabuco Hills Makes Good on Second Chance

Trabuco Hills sophomore Mark Goodwin missed the biggest kick of his life Friday night, but still got what all dejected place-kickers pray for: a second chance.

After missing a crucial extra point, he got another shot and made good--putting a 27-yard field-goal through the posts with 10 seconds left to gave the visiting Mustangs a 30-28 nonleague victory over Laguna Hills.

Thankfully for Trabuco Hills, it just happened that way.

“The good Lord wanted to give that kid a second chance,” Mustang Coach Bill Crow said. “He’s only a sophomore but he came through like a seasoned senior.”

Trabuco Hills (2-0) cut Laguna Hills’ 14-point fourth-quarter lead to one after a 10-yard touchdown run by Deante Pate and an eight-yard touchdown pass from Brian White to John Baggerly.

The score would have been tied, but Goodwin pulled his point-after kick, allowing Laguna Hills to cling to a 30-29 lead with 7:30 left.

With 3:25 remaining, the Mustangs got the ball back on their own 20 and drove to the Hawks’ 10 with 17 seconds left. After an incomplete pass on third down, Goodwin was true from the right hash mark to seal the victory.

“I just kind of got nervous on the PAT, it was my fault,” Goodwin said. “But then I was on the sideline getting ready during the last drive. My heart was going a million miles per hour.”

Matt Chandler scored 22 of Laguna Hills’ points with three touchdown runs and four PAT kicks. He also rushed for 193 yards in 30 carries. His 67-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half gave Laguna Hills (1-1) a 21-14 lead.

Chris Johnson completed seven of 14 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown for the Hawks (1-1).

Daniel Tellez rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns in 24 carries and Baggerly caught five passes fro 95 yards and one touchdown for Trabuco Hills.
