Northwood High won its first varsity football game in the school’s short history, defeating host Apple Valley Granite Hills, 25-20, Friday night.
Steve Lucas led the Timberwolves’ offense, carrying the ball nine times for 38 yards and one touchdown and catching five passes for 97 yards and another score. Quarterback Danny Tomcheck completed seven of 14 passes for 187 yards and no interceptions.
Northwood fell behind, 7-0, in the first quarter, but scored 19 unanswered points in the second to take the lead at the half.
The Timberwolves (1-1) added six points in the third quarter, and held off Granite Hills’ comeback attempt by limiting it to 13 second-half points.
Northwood, which opened in 1999, played a junior varsity schedule last year. The Irvine team next plays Santa Monica St. Monica at Playa del Rey St. Bernard High on Sept. 23.
