Chapman Falls to Whitworth in Football, 49-22

Ty McGregor scored three touchdowns and Billy Condon scored two to lead host Whitworth College to a 49-22 victory over Chapman Saturday in Spokane, Wash.

Chapman (0-2) opened the third quarter with a touchdown by Greg Garand, who caught an eight-yard pass from Stan Villanueva. Whitworth answered with a touchdown by Joel Robnett, who returned the kickoff 100 yards, breaking three tackles, for a 35-14 lead.

Villanueva completed 13 of 22 passes for 194 yards and had one intercepted. Backup quarterback Todd McLean completed five of 12 passes for 45 yards with an interception. Chapman finished with 351 yards on offense.

In the Washington men’s soccer tournament:

UC Irvine 2, Oregon State 1--Roger Davanger and Ilia Nazarov scored second-half goals 10 minutes apart for UCI. Goalkeeper Tyler Reid had three saves for the Anteaters (5-1).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Azusa Pacific 3, Hope International 1--Kristin Fuller and Kelsey Rolls had 10 kills each for host Hope International (4-8, 0-3), which lost, 15-13, 10-15, 15-9, 15-1.

Concordia 3, Vanguard 0--Erin Shevlin had 14 kills and 15 digs and Sara Whitehouse had 10 kills for host Concordia (11-3, 2-1) in a 15-6, 15-5, 15-12 victory.

Carly Birkhauser had 10 kills and 10 digs for Vanguard (0-6, 0-3).

In the Long Beach State women’s volleyball tournament:

UC Irvine 3, New Mexico State 1--Larissa Carter had 18 kills and Chanda McLeod had 10 kills and 16 digs for UCI (5-2), which won, 15-10, 11-15, 15-5, 15-2.

In the Texas Christian women’s volleyball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 3, Tulane 0--Megan Sabo had 22 kills and 11 digs and Jamie Ivers had 11 kills and 17 digs for the Titans, who won, 15-13, 15-10, 15-6.

In a later match, Sabo had 35 kills and Ivers 30 as the Titans (3-7) fell, 16-14, 9-15, 15-13, 12-15, 23-21, to Texas Christian.

In the Southern California men’s water polo tournament:

USC 8, UC Irvine 5--The Anteaters (3-1) had five players score a goal apiece. Senior goalie Dan Hipp had seven saves.

Earlier, Jeff Powers scored four goals and Andy Coffman three as UCI defeated Navy, 14-3.
