Villa Park Keeps Record Unblemished in 27-15 Win

With the exception of a late fourth-quarter letdown, defense and team discipline made the difference for Villa Park in a 27-15 victory over Trabuco Hills Friday at El Modena High.

Villa Park improved to 3-0 and Trabuco Hills fell to 2-1.

There were no major stars for Villa Park, which relied on running back Ricky Campos, who carried the ball 15 times for 59 yards and a five-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and quarterback John Henry Jackson, who completed seven of 20 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns.

Jackson had a 55-yard touchdown pass to Adam Stayberg and a 10-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Arguello.

Arguello caught four passes for 66 yards, kicked three extra points and completed a key 25-yard pass to Jonathon Allmond to set up a score. Allmond, a 165-pound senior, ran six times, including a four-yard touchdown run to give Villa Park a 20-9 lead in the third quarter.

Trabuco Hills was assessed 55 yards on nine penalties. Villa Park, virtually penalty free most of the game, finally began to tire late in the fourth quarter, when a succession of pass interference calls led to Trabuco Hills’ last score, a four-yard touchdown run by Greg Tenuta, which made it, 25-17.

Tenuta only ran the ball twice--both for touchdowns. His earlier five-yard run narrowed Villa Park’s lead to 13-9.

Trabuco Hills’ sophomore quarterback, Brian White, showed his inexperience, completing only eight of 31 passes for 112 yards and no touchdowns. Villa Park’s secondary was aggressive in covering Trabuco Hills’ receivers Tyler Christian (one receptions, 23 yards) and Jon Nelson (three receptions 46 yards), forcing White to go to his backfield with limited success.

Trabuco Hills’ J.T. Ayers had the only interception of the game, when he picked off a Jackson pass in the second quarter.

Daniel Tellez of Trabuco Hills rushed for 85 yards and Mark Goodwin made a 23-yard field goal in the first quarter. That score was set up by John Baggerly’s 62-yard punt return.
