Chris Manderino rushed for 226 yards and three touchdowns to key Newport Harbor’s 35-7 victory over Corona del Mar in a nonleague game Friday at Newport Harbor High.

With Manderino, a senior, carrying the load, the Sailors (2-1) scored on their first four possessions. Newport Harbor led, 35-0, before Corona del Mar scored with 1:24 left to avert the shutout.

Manderino carried 12 times for 74 yards on the Sailors’ opening drive, which covered 99 yards in 15 plays. Junior quarterback Morgan Craig hit tight end Joe Foley with a seven-yard touchdown pass.

On its next possession, Newport Harbor went 74 yards in nine plays, with Manderino doing the honors on a 24-yard run. Manderino, who also had one of the Sailors’ three interceptions, capped the next two scoring drives with runs of 16 and 15 yards.

After netting 22 more yards in the first two carries of Harbor’s fifth possession, Manderino left the game.

“He’s a big ol’ guy,” Newport Harbor Coach Jeff Brinkley said of Manderino. “And our offensive line did a fantastic job.”

The Newport Harbor reserves played most of the final quarter, when the Sea Kings scored on a seven-yard pass from Dylan Hendy to Steven Ward.

Arcadia 42, Santa Ana 27

Arcadia’s Chris Handy rushed for 188 yards and two touchdowns to lead the host Apaches to a 42-27 nonleague victory.

Handy began the scoring in the first quarter with an 18-yard touchdown run. But later in the quarter, Santa Ana’s Ulices Rodriguez recovered a blocked punt in the end zone as the Saints tied the score.

It was all Arcadia thereafter, as the hosts took command with 22 unanswered points and led, 35-13, at intermission.

Santa Ana (0-3) climbed back into contention with 14 fourth-quarter points, but it was too little, too late.

Arcadia quarterback J.D. Ziska threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns, and Handy also scored from 38 yards out.

Santa Ana quarterback Gildardo Sanchez led the Saints’ attack with 93 yards rushing, but was ineffective on the passing front, completing one of eight for six yards and throwing two interceptions--both to Arcadia safety Brian Golper, who also recovered a fumble.

Saint fullback Jesse Ramirez scored two touchdowns, from one and three yards, and had his team’s lone reception of the game. Sanchez also scored on a four-yard run.

Arcadia is 1-2.
