Borchart Says He’ll Play at Santa Clara

Scott Borchart, a three-time All-Southern Section basketball player for Chaminade High, said Monday he has committed to Santa Clara University.

The 6-foot-9 Borchart averaged 19.8 points and 10.4 rebounds last season for the Eagles. He has been starting since his freshman year and helped Chaminade win two Southern Section championships.

* Sylmar, expected to be among the best City Section boys’ teams in the region, will host Crenshaw in a nonleague game on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.

The Cougars haven’t traveled to play a Valley team in a nonleague game in several years.

BASEBALL

* Gregg Wallis, a senior second baseman at Chatsworth High, has committed to UC Irvine, becoming the first baseball recruit to join the Anteaters since they reinstated their program this year.

Irvine will begin play in 2002 under Coach John Savage. Irvine dropped baseball after the 1992 season. Wallis batted .389 last season for a team that was seeded No. 1 in the City Championship playoffs before losing to Kennedy in the quarterfinals.

WATER POLO

* Hernan Golbert of Crespi was chosen most valuable player of the Zack Hahn tournament last week.

Crescenta Valley edged Crespi, 5-4, in the final.
