Bledsoe Is Right on Target

Share

New England quarterback Drew Bledsoe isn’t fooling many defenses, but at least he isn’t fooling himself either.

“If I play well, then we’ve got a chance and can beat just about anybody,” Bledsoe said. “If I play average, we still might have a chance, but it would be kind of difficult. If I play poorly, we’re not going to beat anybody.”

So far this season, Bledsoe has throw three touchdown passes and two interceptions. He has been sacked 17 times and hasn’t thrown for more than 229 yards in a game.

The Patriots are 0-4.

Buffalo Bill quarterback Doug Flutie, out since July because of a torn groin muscle, is expected to be back as the No. 2 quarterback this week when the Bills face the Indianapolis Colts.

Moving up to No. 1, however, doesn’t appear to be in the game plan with starter Rob Johnson now the league’s third-highest-rated passer at 100.9

“I’m awfully happy with how our quarterback is doing,” Buffalo Coach Wade Phillips said of Johnson. “I don’t think you want to endanger that. I will look at it and see where [Flutie] is, see what he can do for us.

“It’s like any player that we have . . . if he’s playing good, you got to get him in the game.”

The Colts will be coming off the biggest offensive outburst in the NFL this season, a 533-yard output against the Jacksonville Jaguars Monday night. Included was a franchise-record 440-yard passing night by quarterback Peyton Manning.
