Mater Dei’s Cook Commits to Santa Barbara
C.J. Cook, an outfielder for Mater Dei, has committed to play baseball at UC Santa Barbara next spring, Mater Dei Coach Burt Call said.
Cook was an All-Serra League selection last season and was hitting .333 with eight RBIs through Tuesday.
BASKETBALL
Marcus Espinoza, a junior at Katella High, has been selected to participate in the USA Junior Nationals championship sports festival, July 9-15 in Atlanta. Espinoza, a second-team All-Empire League selection this past season, earned his way into the festival by his recent play at the USA Junior Nationals all-state competition in Las Vegas.
HOCKEY
The Lady Ducks, a girls’ 13-15 team from Anaheim, won the Western States Regional and will play in the national finals Tuesday through April 8 in St. Paul, Minn.
HONORS
Four Vanguard women’s basketball players have been named NAIA All-American scholar-athletes, school officials announced.
Jessica Lenderman (4.0 grade-point average), Rachel Fikse (3.93), Beth Weidler (3.6) and Kelly Boeke (3.59) were honored. A student-athlete must be a junior or senior and maintain at least a 3.5 GPA to be eligible.
SOCCER
Coco D’Angelo, a forward at Capistrano Valley, has signed to play at New Mexico next season, according to Kit and Jorge Vela, the Lobos’ women’s coaches.
