* Former Notre Dame third baseman Alec Moss, a freshman at Xavier, hit a grand slam and finished with five runs batted in during a 22-9 victory over Dayton on Sunday.

BASKETBALL

* Crystal McCutcheon of Antelope Valley High was selected most valuable player of the inaugural Antelope Valley All-Star girls’ game on Sunday after collecting 28 points and 14 rebounds in the Blue team’s 89-62 victory over the Gold at Antelope Valley College.

Judy Collier of Palmdale had 21 points for the Gold.

* Idel Dawson of Highland was selected most valuable player of the Antelope Valley All-Star boys’ game on Sunday after leading the Blue team to a 131-121 victory with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Tony Johnson led the Gold team with 26 points.

FOOTBALL

* Westlake, which was 31-5-1 the last three seasons, hired three assistants--Ray Gerena (offensive line), Mark Serve (receivers and special teams) and Gil Carillo (running backs).

SWIMMING

* Alemany senior Maureen Farrell placed fourth in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:15.50 on Sunday, the last day of the Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships in Austin, Texas.

Farrell’s time tied her with Jessica Hayes of Irvine University High.

Florida-bound Farrell was fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.77 on Thursday.

* Tawne Fishback, a senior at Crescenta Valley, signed with Fresno State.

Fishback placed third in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.15 at the Southern Section Division II championships last year.
